Japanese Beetle Magnets in a Specimen Box – Real-Scale Insect Collectibles from Japan
The most detailed Japanese beetle collectibles you can buy – displayed in a miniature German-style specimen box
If you love insects, entomology, or the beauty of Japan’s native beetles, this is unlike anything you’ll find outside Japan.
These are real-scale beetle magnets, sculpted with museum-level detail – from the fine texture of antennae to the metallic sheen of the elytra – and displayed inside a miniature German-style specimen box. Not a sticker. Not a flat print. A three-dimensional, precisely crafted collectible that looks exactly like a real pinned specimen.
This is a Japanese capsule toy (gashapon) series. And it’s one of the most impressive ones we’ve ever carried.
What’s Inside the Specimen Box
The collection features 6 species of Japanese beetles, each reproduced at near life-size scale:
1. Yamato Jewel Beetle (Chrysochroa fulgidissima / ヤマトタマムシ)

Japan’s most iconic beetle. Its iridescent wings shift between deep green and purple depending on the angle of light – a structural coloration so striking that its wings were used to decorate a 7th-century Japanese national treasure shrine at Hōryū-ji Temple in Nara. In Japanese, tamamushi literally means “jewel bug.”
2. Ooururi Ground Beetle (Carabus insulicola / オオルリオサムシ)

A brilliant metallic blue-purple ground beetle found in Japan’s mountain forests. Ground beetles in this family are fierce, fast predators – and visually stunning. Rarely seen outside Japan.
3. Schoenherr’s Gem Weevil (Eupholus schoenherri / ショーエンヘルホウセキゾウムシ)

An extraordinary weevil from Papua New Guinea, known for its vivid turquoise and black banded pattern. One of the most visually striking weevils in the world. A favourite among entomology collectors globally.
4–6. Oosenchikogane Dung Beetle – Red, Blue & Green (Phelotrupes laevistriatus / オオセンチコガネ)

Japan’s jewel dung beetle, appearing in three natural colour variants: red, blue, and green. Unlike most dung beetles, these are prized for their brilliant metallic sheen. All three colour forms exist in nature – and all three are included in this collection.
Why This Is Different from Other Insect Collectibles
Most insect figures are generic. This series is not.
- Real-scale accuracy – each beetle is sculpted close to its actual body size
- Antennae, leg joints, and surface texture are individually modelled
- Metallic finish on species that have it in real life (Jewel Beetle, Oosenchikogane)
- German-style specimen box design – the same format used in real entomology collections
- Magnet base – display on a fridge, metal shelf, whiteboard, or any magnetic surface
This is the kind of object that makes entomologists stop and look twice.

A Note on the Yamato Jewel Beetle
Of all the species in this set, the Yamato Jewel Beetle deserves special mention.
It is one of Japan’s most culturally significant insects. Its wings were used as decoration in the Tamamushi Shrine – a 7th-century masterpiece now held at Hōryū-ji Temple in Nara, one of Japan’s oldest and most important Buddhist temples. The iridescent green-and-purple sheen of its elytra is so unique that the Japanese language has a word for it: tamamushi-iro (玉虫色), meaning a colour that appears to change depending on how you look at it.
Owning a replica of this beetle is, in a small way, connecting to over 1,300 years of Japanese history.
